In this episode, we talk to Bob Roth, managing partner of Cypress HomeCare Solutions. Speaking from an extensive career in home care, Roth, who is also the radio show host of Health Future and writes a monthly column, “Aging Today,” discusses his work with Cypress HomeCare.
Topics discussed:
- The personal experience that led Bob Roth to home care
- The benefits of an employee-based organization
- Workforce issues in home care
Conversation Highlights:
Roth shares that his interest in the home care field began when his own mother suffered a heart attack and he and his family became caregivers overnight. He noticed the severe lack of resources for people in his situation and wanted to start Cypress HomeCare Solutions to help families make sure that their loved ones could age at home.
Roth explains that choosing a home care organization is about finding one whose caregivers you can trust and feel a peace of mind with as they become a part of a loved one’s life. He goes on to say that the best way to ensure this is to use an employee-based organization for your home care needs.
These companies, as opposed to hiring a private caregiver, offer more security for the people needing care. Employee-based agencies take the extra step of conducting background checks and providing worker’s compensation and liability insurance, which is not always the case with private caregivers. Roth explains that the caregiver-patient relationship is a very special one that is built on the trust and care that employee-based organizations cultivate. Furthermore, the caregiver becomes a regular part of the patient’s life, creating a genuine, two-way relationship throughout the home care journey.
Finally, Roth expressed his concerns with the workforce shortage in the home care field. He believes that adding classes on the high school level, such as home economics, can help everyone, whether they plan to be caregivers or not, learn the soft skills needed to help any person age, and in turn help fuel the field with more workers in the future.
