Three Steps to Navigate Change in Home Care

One of the few constants in home care is change. There can be worldwide changes, like managing your client caregivers and organization through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Industry-wide changes are common, such as Medicare Advantage Plans reimbursing for home care services. Policy and regulatory changes come from state rules and requirements. Even technology changes in the ever-evolving landscape of home care software allow for better managing your organization and even recruiting caregivers.

Or the change could be specific to your organization:

  • New policies and procedures
  • New organization initiatives
  • New business lines
  • New technology solutions

Whatever the change your organization faces, there are three steps to ensure your organization successfully navigates the change management process.

1. Planning for Change

The first step in dealing with change is planning for it to happen. Understand and evaluate why your organization is considering change. Is your home care organization changing for the right reason? Is it a long-term solution or a stopgap? Once you have answered these questions, decide on a change management strategy. Evaluate how long the change will take and the strategies you need to use to ensure buy-in and rapid adoption. The most important part of developing a change management strategy is identifying who must be part of the process. If the right people aren’t on board, the change is doomed before it is in place. Your organization should choose a group of well-rounded individuals with diverse backgrounds to make up the change management team.

2. Implementing the Strategy

The strategy and change management team have been finalized, so now the work begins. Create a realistic timeline of what should happen and when. To do this, the team must decide what a successful change will look like. Next, determine how the organization will measure the success of the implementation. Once the change process begins, have regular touchpoints to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy; your organization shouldn’t be afraid to tweak aspects of the plan that aren’t working.

3. Support the Change

You’ve taken steps to create and implement a change management process with your team. Now it’s time to seek feedback. While you are already getting feedback from the change management team along the way, it is necessary to also get input from those who the change is impacting. This is vital to the long-term success of the process. Once feedback is given, the team must evaluate and address all concerns and challenges that your organization has experienced as they happen. If the team suspects certain aspects will be more difficult to implement, be proactive in addressing those challenges.

Implementing change can be a challenge. Because of this, your home care organization must celebrate what works during the process. Be sure to highlight areas of success and how the change has been effective for your organization. Once your organization works together to implement a change management process, tackling other home care industry changes will become easier.
